Just to dispel a little myth before we go any further – there are no more than a handful of Search Engines and anyone claiming to register your website with thousands of them is tricking you into providing your E-mail address so you then receive countless spam E-mail messages. Many Businesses have invested time, money and anticipation establishing an on-line identity through launching their Websites, only to be disappointed by the lack of response from the most important place: people actively looking every day for solutions to their problems – problems that the Business owner knows they are able to solve. I know, because I was one too… All too frequently the promise of increased business from the all-important Website does not materialise, resulting in disappointment and frustration. Business owners are left with little more than an “online brochure” that no one is reading because it can’t even be found. I once came across the analogy of having a signpost in the middle of the Sahara desert which I thought was very fitting!
It’s all too easy these days to publish a Website and expect visitors to come in their droves and start buying. The reality is very different, and careful research needs to be undertaken even before the first step of registering a Domain Name – after all you’re going to be stuck with it for possibly many years to come. In addition, Website designers are all too obsessed with glitzy design and clever gadgets, and pay little or no attention to arguably the most important function of a website, which is to get visitors quickly, give them exactly what they want when they get there, and convert those visitors into sales and revenue on an ongoing basis. I have lost count of the Websites I have analysed which while looking great have few or none of the critical underlying elements that the Search Engines crave if your Website is to be “indexed” or listed with them so they show up when someone searches for you. Ease of navigation and relevant content are mandatory both for Visitors and Search Engines alike. There are many factors to be taken into consideration when creating a Website, but if these two things are done right you’ll immediately have an enormous advantage over those of your competitors who have not and have sacrificed Utility on the Altar of Appearance by having fancy Flash animations with “skip intro” (what’s the point of that if everyone skips it?) and other pointless gimmicks.
The old-fashioned approach is just that: old-fashioned. It’s no longer needed and here’s why - your Website had a purpose and it can fulfil the purpose it was originally intended for, which is to get visitors and convert them to paying customers.
